Why VCE Trial Exams Are a Vital Preparation Step

In the run-up to your final exams, you might be feeling a little anxious.
And itโ€™s no wonder: VCE exams are a big deal! A key stepping stone to university and your future beyond education, you know how important preparation is.

Students usually use this time to re-read class notes and textbooks, create recall systems (such as flashcards and self-testing), and run through practice tests at home. All of this is great, but it misses one key stepโ€ฆ A VCE trial exam.

The difference between using past papers at home and sitting a proper trial exam under real conditions is huge. Read on to find out how a trial exam could considerably boost your study score.

Content knowledge vs exam performance

All too often, students know the material well but still underperform in their VCE exams.
Thatโ€™s because exam success doesnโ€™t solely come from a textbook. Other pressures come into play, such as:

  • Time management
  • Question sequencing
  • Exam fatigue
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Behavioural expectations

Certain skills can only be honed by taking a trial exam in a proper test environment. Practice exams help you overcome common pressures, and understand (and fill) the gaps. They give you real insight into your strengths and areas for improvement, whether youโ€™re struggling with particular topics or exam conduct, such as time management.

What exam performance reveals about students

Practice VCE exams tell you how you perform when conditions are unfamiliar. They expose gaps that SACs donโ€™t, as SACs are held in familiar environments with known formats. VCE exams are external assessments; they present new formats, and every school in the state must sit the exam under the same strict conditions.

You donโ€™t want your first interaction with these conditions to be the official exam. With a VCE trial test, youโ€™ll get a clear idea of how youโ€™ll react and perform when the real thing rolls around.

Thereโ€™s also diagnostic value in these exams. Youโ€™ll find out exactly where marks are lost โ€“ this is more useful than a raw score you might receive from home practice papers.

Why taking a VCE trial exam in September matters

The education professionals at DR. STUDY have figured out that September is the โ€œsweet spotโ€ for VCE trial exams.

By September, youโ€™ve covered most of the material you need, so your score at this point is a good indication of your current level. Since the VCE written exams run between October and November, you have enough time to improve on your score. Whether through VCE tutoring or practising at home, youโ€™ll have 1-2 months to reflect on your performance, and grow your confidence and competence for the actual exams.

When students take practice tests too early, theyโ€™re not equipped with the knowledge they need, and pressures are still low. Take them too late, and you donโ€™t get enough time to act on the results.

How to use the results

With real feedback from your trial exam, youโ€™re ready to go for maximum results as the exams get closer.

This feedback is just what you need to prepare strategically โ€“ and it separates students from those following a generic study plan or simply practising more.

Build the final weeks of study around what the trial exam revealed. Simply knowing the score and promising yourself youโ€™ll do better isnโ€™t enough. The biggest improvements come when you get specific:

  • Break down your results by topic and question type to address the gaps in your knowledge
  • Rewrite the questions where you could have scored higher, until your answers are consistently strong

How you respond at this point could determine whether you stay where you are, or jump up a grade (or two!)
